the ab initio way

Per definition ab initio means from “first principles” without further assumptions. Thus, if you neglect (semi)-empirical methods, quantum physics/computational chemistry is ab initio as it is only based on Schrädingers equation (or Diracs equation if we treat is relativistically).

This is also the case for classical mechanics and classical mechanics where the principles are Newtons Law and Maxwells equations, respectively.
